Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, at the behest of President Thomas Jefferson, head west to the Pacific up the Missouri River ahead of the rising sun, in an exploration that began in 1803. They made it to Seaside, Oregon, and back, mapping a large part of the Louisiana Purchase, to include the Missouri and Columbia Rivers and the Rocky Mountains. This watercolor by Paul Jackson is one of a series highlighting this historic expedition by the artist.
